What is PDF splitting?

Splitting a PDF cuts one document into several smaller PDFs. It's the quick way to send each chapter of a report to a different person, turn a scanned stack of invoices into one file per invoice, or get a big file under an email size limit.

Tool description

This tool loads one PDF and shows every page as a thumbnail. Choose how to split it: every page into its own file, every few pages, or by page ranges you type. Each thumbnail shows the file its page goes to, so you can check the result before you download it. A single file downloads as a PDF, several files come in one ZIP.

Features

  • Splits into single pages, into files with a set number of pages, or by your own page ranges
  • Shows on each thumbnail which file the page goes to
  • Lets a page go into more than one file, and leaves out pages that are in no range
  • Keeps links between pages of the same file working
  • Keeps the document title, author and subject in every file
  • Runs in your browser, so your PDF is never uploaded

Examples

For a PDF with 12 pages named report.pdf:

  • Every page gives 12 files, report-01.pdf to report-12.pdf.
  • Every few pages, with 5 pages per file, gives 3 files: pages 1 to 5, 6 to 10, and 11 and 12.
  • The page ranges 1-3, 4-8, 9- give 3 files: pages 1 to 3, 4 to 8, and 9 to 12.

Tips

  • A range that ends with a dash, such as 9-, runs to the last page.
  • Files are numbered in the order you type the ranges, so 9-, 1-3 puts pages 9 to 12 in the first file.
  • Bookmarks are not carried over, and form fields keep their look but can no longer be filled in.
