What is a square image?

A square image has the same width and height, an aspect ratio of 1:1. Instagram grids, profile pictures, and online shops often show images as squares and crop anything else to fit. Converting a photo to a square by adding space around it keeps the whole picture instead of cutting off its edges.

Tool description

Open an image and it's placed in the middle of a white square as wide as its longest side. Pick another background color, a blurred copy of the photo that fills the square, or a transparent background. Add padding to leave space around the image on every side. Download the square as PNG, JPG, or WebP.

Features

  • Color, blurred photo, or transparent background
  • Padding around the image, in percent of its longest side
  • No cropping and no resizing: the image keeps every pixel
  • Runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded

Tips

  • The blurred background fills the empty bars with the photo's own colors, so a wide landscape still looks full in a square post.
  • Choose a transparent background and save as PNG or WebP to place the square on a page or design of any color.
  • JPG has no transparency, so a transparent background turns white there.
