Why add a background color to a transparent image?

A PNG or WebP with a transparent background, like a logo, a product cutout or a sticker, has nothing behind the subject. That's great on a web page, but plenty of places can't show transparency: some apps show it as black, JPG can't store it, and online shops often ask for a plain white background. Adding a background color fills every transparent pixel with one solid color, so you get an ordinary image that looks the same everywhere.

Tool description

Open a transparent image and pick a color, white by default. The preview updates right away, and the before and after view compares the result with the transparent original. Download it as PNG, JPG or WebP.

Soft edges, shadows and other partly transparent pixels mix with the new color the way a browser shows them over it, so edges stay smooth. If the image you open has no transparent parts, the tool tells you, since there's nothing to fill.

Features

  • Any background color, white by default
  • Smooth edges: partly transparent pixels blend with the color
  • Tells you when an image has no transparency to fill
  • Download as PNG, JPG or WebP

Tips

  • Amazon wants the main product photo on pure white, which is the default #ffffff.
  • To match a brand or the page the image goes on, paste the hex code into the color field.
  • The result has no transparency left, so JPG is fine and often a smaller file than PNG for photos.
