What is image rotation?

Rotating an image turns it around its center by an angle. Quarter turns fix photos that came out sideways or upside down. Small angles of a degree or two straighten a tilted horizon or a crooked scan. Any angle in between leaves empty corners, because the turned rectangle no longer fills a straight frame.

Tool description

Open an image, then drag the angle slider or type an exact angle. Positive angles turn the image clockwise, negative ones counterclockwise, and "Rotate left" and "Rotate right" turn it by 90° at a time. With "Expand to fit" on, the canvas grows so no corner of the photo is cut off. Turn it off to keep the original size instead. The empty corners stay transparent, or you can fill them with a color. Download the result as PNG, JPG, or WebP.

Features

  • Any angle, plus quarter turns with one click
  • A canvas that grows to fit the turned image, or keeps its size
  • Transparent or colored corners
  • Runs in your browser, so your images are never uploaded

How it works

The tool draws the image turned around its middle onto a new canvas. Quarter turns move whole pixels, so the image stays exactly as sharp as it was. Other angles blend each new pixel from its neighbors and smooth the edges, so the turned photo has no jagged outline.

Tips

  • To straighten a horizon, try small angles until a line that should be level looks level, then crop away the empty corners.
  • PNG and WebP keep the corners transparent. JPG has no transparency, so the corners turn white unless you fill them with another color.
