What is a dummy ZIP file?
A dummy ZIP file is an archive packed with placeholder files. It's useful for testing upload forms, unzip code and archive viewers, for example to see what happens with 1,000 files, lots of folders, or files that won't compress.
Tool description
This tool builds a ZIP archive in your browser. Set the number of files (1 to 1,000), the size of each file in B, KB or MB, and how many folders to spread them over (0 to 50). With 0 folders every file sits in the root of the archive. Otherwise the files are shared out across folder-1, folder-2 and so on in turn. Files are numbered, like file-01.txt.
Pick the file content: lorem ipsum text, zero bytes, which compress well, or random bytes, which don't compress. You can change the file extension, and choose Deflate for a smaller archive or Store for no compression.
A file tree shows what will go into the archive, with the file count and total uncompressed size. Create and download ZIP builds it with a progress bar and then shows the archive size.
Examples
- 1,000 small text files to test how an extractor handles many entries
- Random bytes with Store for an archive about as big as the files inside
- Zero bytes with Deflate for a big uncompressed size in a tiny archive
Features
- Up to 1,000 files in up to 50 folders
- Text, zero or random content, with Deflate or Store compression
- File tree preview and the final archive size
Limitations
All files together can add up to 256 MB before compression.
