What is a dummy image?

A dummy image, or placeholder image, is a simple picture of a set size that stands in for real content. It's useful for testing image uploads, thumbnails and cropping, or for filling a layout before the real photos arrive.

Tool description

This tool draws a test image and saves it as PNG, JPEG or WebP. Set the width and height from 1 to 8,000 pixels and pick a background: a solid color, a diagonal gradient between two colors, a checkerboard, or random noise.

By default the image size is written in the middle, like "1200 × 800". You can type your own text, change its color, or turn the text off. Long text shrinks to fit the width. For JPEG and WebP you can set the quality from 1 to 100, which changes the file size.

The preview updates as you type and shows the dimensions, format and file size. Everything is drawn in your browser. If your browser can't save WebP, you get a PNG, and the file name follows. If it can't draw an image that large, the tool asks you to try a smaller width or height.

Examples

  • A 4,000 by 3,000 JPEG to test an upload limit or image resizing
  • A random noise PNG for a heavy file, since noise barely compresses
  • A checkerboard to spot stretching or blurry scaling in a preview

Features

  • PNG, JPEG and WebP up to 8,000 by 8,000 pixels
  • Solid, gradient, checkerboard and noise backgrounds
  • Optional centered text with the image size or your own label
