What is a WAV file?
A WAV file usually holds uncompressed audio, so its size depends only on the length, sample rate, bit depth and number of channels. A test WAV with a known tone or noise is handy for checking audio players, speakers, upload limits and audio processing code.
Tool description
This tool generates a WAV file in your browser. Pick a sound: a sine tone, square wave, sawtooth wave, frequency sweep, white noise, pink noise or silence. Tones take a frequency from 1 to 48,000 Hz. The sweep moves exponentially from a start frequency to an end frequency over the whole file.
Set the duration from 0.01 to 300 seconds, the sample rate (8,000, 16,000, 22,050, 44,100, 48,000 or 96,000 Hz), the bit depth (8, 16 or 24 bit PCM, or 32 bit float), mono or stereo, and the volume. You can play the result before you download it, and see its bitrate and file size.
Examples
- A 1 second 440 Hz sine tone to check that a player works
- A sweep from 20 to 20,000 Hz to test speakers or headphones
- Five minutes of noise at 96,000 Hz and 32 bit to test an upload size limit
Features
- Seven sounds, from pure tones and sweeps to noise and silence
- Sample rates from 8,000 to 96,000 Hz, 8 to 32 bit, mono or stereo
- A player to preview the sound before you download it
