What is Code 128?
Code 128 is a compact linear barcode that encodes all 128 ASCII characters: capital and lowercase letters, digits, spaces, punctuation and control characters. It switches between three code sets, A, B and C, and code set C packs two digits into each symbol, so long numbers stay short. Every Code 128 barcode ends in a check character that scanners verify. It's one of the most used barcodes in shipping, logistics and inventory, and GS1-128, the barcode on many shipping labels, is built on it.
Tool description
This tool turns text into a Code 128 barcode as you type. It picks the code sets for you, switching to code set C for runs of digits, and adds the check character. Change the bar and background colors, hide the text under the bars if you don't need it, and download the barcode as a PNG, JPG or WebP image.
Features
- Full ASCII - letters, digits, spaces and symbols in one barcode
- Automatic code sets - the shortest mix of code sets A, B and C, with the check character added
- Custom colors - any color for the bars and the background
- Image download - PNG, JPG or WebP
Tips
- Letters with accents and characters of other alphabets aren't ASCII, so Code 128 can't encode them.
- Keep dark bars on a light background: many scanners can't read light bars on a dark one.
- When you place the barcode in a layout, leave blank space on both sides: scanners need this quiet zone to find where the barcode starts and ends.
