What is Codabar?

Codabar, also known as NW-7, Code 2 of 7 or USD-4, is one of the oldest linear barcodes. It encodes the digits 0 to 9 and the symbols - $ : / . +, between a start and a stop letter from A to D. It's easy to print, even on dot matrix printers, and needs no check digit, so it's still used by libraries, blood banks, photo labs and on older shipping labels.

Tool description

Type the digits and symbols and the tool draws the Codabar barcode as you type. Without start and stop letters it uses A at both ends. To use other ones, as your library or lab system may expect, type them at the start and the end, such as A40156B. The text under the bars leaves the start and stop letters out. Change the bar and background colors, hide the text if you don't need it, and download the barcode as a PNG, JPG or WebP image.

Features

  • Digits and symbols - 0 to 9 and - $ : / . +
  • Start and stop letters - A to D, or A at both ends when you leave them out
  • Custom colors - any color for the bars and the background
  • Image download - PNG, JPG or WebP

Tips

  • Use the start and stop letters of the barcodes you already have, as some systems read them to tell kinds of labels apart.
  • Codabar holds numbers only: for letters, use Code 39 or Code 128.
