Where do first names come from?

Most first names started as words in an older language. Sophia is Greek for wisdom, David is Hebrew for beloved, and Leo is Latin for lion. Names also go in and out of fashion and say a lot about a culture and an era, so a good name for a baby or a character fits its background as well as its sound. Fantasy writers go further and invent names that sound like they come from a made up language.

Tool description

Say what the name is for in What is the name for?: a baby, a character in a novel, a hero in a game. Add the culture, era, style or sound you want. Pick a Gender: Any for a mix, or Male, Female or Unisex. Then click Generate names.

Name ideas lists 10 first names, each with a short note on its origin and meaning. The list mixes well known and less common names and doesn't repeat a name or a close variant. For fantasy and other fictional settings, the AI can invent names and says what they evoke instead of a real origin.

For family names, use the AI Surname Generator.
