What is age verification?

Age verification is the process of confirming that a person meets a minimum age requirement, typically used to control access to age-restricted content, products, or services. Websites and businesses commonly require users to be at least 18 or 21 years old before accessing alcohol, gambling, adult content, or other regulated material.

Age is calculated from a date of birth relative to today. The calculation must account for whether the birthday has occurred yet in the current year — someone born on December 31, 2006 is still 17 on December 30, 2024, even though the year difference is 18.
