What is vacation optimization?
Vacation optimization is the strategic planning of paid time off (PTO) to maximize the total number of consecutive days away from work. By strategically positioning PTO days around weekends and public holidays, employees can often get significantly more time off than the number of PTO days they actually use. For example, taking 4 PTO days around a holiday weekend might result in 9 or 10 consecutive days off.
This approach considers the calendar, public holidays specific to your country, and your available PTO allowance to find the most efficient combinations—giving you the best return on your vacation days.
Tool description
The Vacation Optimizer helps you plan your time off strategically by analyzing public holidays, weekends, and your PTO allowance to find the most efficient vacation periods. Select your country, enter your available PTO days, and the tool automatically calculates optimal vacation windows that maximize your total days off while minimizing PTO usage.
The tool uses real public holiday data for countries worldwide, ensuring accurate calculations based on your specific location. Results are displayed in an interactive calendar view with detailed statistics showing total days off, PTO used, weekend days, and public holidays included.

How the optimization works

- Extends to weekends: Automatically includes adjacent Saturdays and Sundays
- Calculates efficiency: Measures total days off divided by PTO days used
- Ranks options: Presents the best vacation periods sorted by total days off
- Filters expired dates: Optionally hides periods that have already passed

Tips for best results
- Plan early: Run the optimizer at the beginning of the year to book popular holiday periods before others
- Consider shoulder seasons: Sometimes taking vacation a day or two before a holiday cluster starts can significantly increase total days off
- Check multiple years: If planning far ahead, compare options across different years
- Combine with company holidays: Some employers offer additional days off around major holidays—factor these into your planning
