What is a UPI QR code?
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is India's instant bank-to-bank payment system, used through apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM. A UPI QR code holds a payment link with your UPI ID, and optionally your name, an amount and a note. When someone scans it with any UPI app, the payment screen opens with those details filled in, so they only have to confirm and enter their PIN. Shops, freelancers, landlords and event organisers use them to get paid without sharing bank account details.
Tool description
This tool builds a UPI payment QR code from your UPI ID. Add your name, a fixed amount and a note if you like, then download the code as an image to print, share or add to an invoice. For merchant UPI IDs you can also add an order reference and a merchant category code.
Features
- Works with any UPI ID, such as yourname@okaxis or 9876543210@ybl
- Optional payee name, amount and payment note
- Fixed amount in rupees, or no amount so the payer types it in
- Accepts amounts written with separators, such as 1,00,000 or 1,250.50
- Optional transaction reference and merchant category code for merchant payments
- Checks the UPI ID, amount and category code as you type
- Custom colors and error correction level
- Download as PNG, JPEG or WebP, or copy the raw upi://pay link
How it works
The tool writes a standard upi://pay link, the format UPI apps read from QR codes: your UPI ID as pa, the name as pn, the amount as am with the currency INR, and the note as tn. Merchant details go in as tr and mc. Empty fields are left out of the link, and text is URL-encoded so spaces and symbols survive the scan. The QR code is created in your browser, so your payment details never leave your device. The code only fills in the payment screen: no money moves until the payer confirms the payment in their app.
Tips
- Scan the code with your own UPI app before you print it, and check that the name shown matches your account.
- Leave the amount empty for a code you print once and reuse, such as one on a shop counter. Set an amount for one-off bills and invoices.
- Many UPI apps show the name registered with the bank as well as, or instead of, the payee name, so use the name on your account.
- Only turn on merchant details for a merchant UPI ID. Some payment apps block payments to a personal UPI ID when the code includes them.
- Keep dark code on a light background, and print it at least 2 × 2 cm so older phone cameras can read it.
