What is ROM identification?
Game ROM and disc images often contain recognizable headers, checksums, or byte patterns that reveal the console family they came from. Those signatures are useful because many formats share the same file extensions or container styles.
Heuristic identification is not perfect, but it can quickly narrow down the likely platform when you only have a raw file.
Tool description
This tool scans a ROM or disc file and guesses the source console, confidence level, reason, and sometimes the game title. It examines the first part of the file and uses known signatures and fallback heuristics to make an educated match.
It is useful when you need a fast platform guess before opening the file in a specialized emulator or archive tool.
Examples
- NES ROM files
- Game Boy and Game Boy Advance ROMs
- SNES, N64, and PlayStation images
Features
- High, medium, and low confidence results
- Title extraction for supported formats
- Extension-based fallback guesses
Limitations
The tool is heuristic only and depends on file signatures plus known extensions.
Uncommon dumps, custom headers, or unsupported formats can be misclassified or missed entirely.
