What is a crossword clue?

A crossword clue is a short phrase that points to a single word or phrase through a definition, wordplay, or both. Quick clues rely mostly on a straightforward definition, while cryptic clues combine a definition with anagrams, hidden words, homophones, or other wordplay. Clues are often followed by an enumeration in parentheses, such as (5) or (4,3), showing how many letters the answer contains.

How does crossword solving work?

Solving a clue means matching its wording to a word that fits both the meaning and any letter-count constraint. Experienced solvers build up a mental library of common crossword answers, abbreviations, and wordplay patterns, then cross-check candidate answers against intersecting letters in the grid. A single tricky clue can stall an otherwise finished puzzle.

Tool description

This tool solves crossword clues using AI. Paste in one or more clues, one per line, optionally with an enumeration in parentheses, and it returns the most likely answer for each clue along with a short explanation of the reasoning behind it.

It is designed to help you get unstuck on individual clues, not to auto-complete an entire puzzle grid.

Examples

Features

  • Batch solving: Paste multiple clues at once and get an answer for each
  • Length-aware: Honors enumerations like (5) or (4,3) when given
  • Explained answers: Shows the reasoning behind each answer, not just the word

Limitations

  • Very obscure, highly localized, or ambiguous clues may not be solved correctly.
  • The tool returns one best guess per clue rather than a ranked list of alternatives.
  • Cryptic clue wordplay can occasionally be misread, so double-check tricky answers.
