What is a PPTX file?

PPTX is the presentation format of Microsoft PowerPoint since 2007, part of the Office Open XML standard. A .pptx file is a ZIP archive of XML files: one for each slide, plus slide layouts and masters, a theme with the deck's colors and fonts, and the pictures and charts the slides use. Google Slides, Keynote and LibreOffice Impress can all save presentations as .pptx, so it is the most common way to share slides.

Only presentation software can open a .pptx, though. A web page opens in any browser, on any device, so converting slides to HTML is a simple way to publish a deck on a website, put it on an intranet or send it to someone who doesn't have PowerPoint.

Tool description

This tool converts a PowerPoint presentation to one HTML file. Choose a .pptx file and every slide is drawn in your browser and turned into HTML, with its text, shapes, pictures, tables and charts in place. The preview shows the page as it will look, and Download HTML saves it.

The page is a single file that works offline: pictures are embedded in it, and charts are saved as sharp images. Slides are stacked one below the other and shrink to fit narrow screens such as phones. Text stays real text, so people can select and copy it and search engines can read it.

Show files (.ppsx), templates (.potx) and macro-enabled presentations (.pptm) work too. Old .ppt files and presentations protected with a password can't be read: save them as .pptx without a password first.

Features

  • One self-contained HTML file with every slide
  • Text, shapes, pictures, tables, charts, SmartArt and backgrounds from the slide masters
  • Selectable text instead of screenshots of the slides
  • Slides that scale down to fit phone screens
  • Preview of the page before you download it
  • Nothing uploaded: the presentation is converted in your browser

How it works

The tool opens the .pptx archive and reads the slide size, the masters, layouts and theme, and every slide. Each slide is then drawn as HTML and SVG with the same positions, colors and fonts as in PowerPoint. Pictures from the presentation are embedded in the page as data URLs, and each chart is saved as a picture at twice the screen resolution. A short script in the page scales each slide to the width of the window.

Tips

  • Fonts aren't embedded in the page. Text shows in the fonts installed on the viewer's device, so a deck in Arial or Calibri looks closest to the original
  • A picture repeated on every slide, such as a logo from the slide master, is saved once per slide. Large background photos on many slides make the page large
  • To get the slides as pictures instead, use the Presentation to Image Converter

FAQ

Is my presentation uploaded to a server? No. The file is read and converted in your browser and never leaves your device.

Are animations and transitions kept? No. The page shows each slide as it looks after all its animations, and there are no transitions between slides.

Are speaker notes included? No, the page has only the slides.

Can I print the page? Yes. In Chrome and Edge each slide prints on its own page the size of the slide, with its background colors, so Save as PDF gives you a PDF of the deck.
