What is a kanban board?

A kanban board is a visual way to track work as it moves through a process. You split work into columns like To Do, In Progress, and Done, then move cards across the board as the work changes state. It is a good fit for personal task tracking, sprint planning, and small project boards.

Tool description

Kanban Board Maker lets you build and edit a kanban board in your browser. You can add columns, add cards, rename both, drag cards between columns, and reorder columns and cards with drag and drop. The board saves in your browser automatically, so your changes stay there when you come back later.

It also supports JSON import and export. That makes it easy to back up a board, move it to another device, or share the structure with someone else.

Features

  • Drag and drop columns and cards to change the board layout.
  • Edit column titles and card text inline.
  • Import and export board data as JSON, with local browser storage for automatic saving.

How it works

The tool starts with three default columns: To Do, In Progress, and Done. Each column can hold any number of cards. You can delete columns and cards, or clear the board and start over.

The exported JSON keeps only the board content, not the internal ids used by the editor. A saved board looks like this:

[
  {
    "title": "To Do",
    "cards": [{ "content": "Write README" }]
  },
  {
    "title": "In Progress",
    "cards": []
  },
  {
    "title": "Done",
    "cards": []
  }
]

Tips

  • Use export before making larger changes if you want a backup copy of the board.
  • Imported files must be valid JSON in the same board format the tool exports.
  • If you want a clean board, use Clear to reset the default columns.
