What is an image collage?

An image collage puts several photos together in one picture, side by side in a grid or in a layout of larger and smaller frames. Collages are used for social media posts, photo albums, before-and-after comparisons, mood boards, product overviews, and printed photo gifts.

Tool description

This tool makes a collage from your images right in your browser. Add the images, or paste them from the clipboard, choose a layout, and the collage is ready to download as a JPG, PNG, or WebP file. You can move each photo in its frame, swap photos, and resize the frames by dragging, so the collage looks the way you want.

Features

Arranging the photos

  • Move a photo in its frame: drag it. When the frame crops the photo, this chooses which part shows.
  • Swap two photos: drag one onto the other and let go when the other one is highlighted.
  • Resize frames: drag the gap between two frames. A grip shows there when the pointer is over the collage.
  • Zoom: select a photo and use the zoom buttons under the preview, pinch on a trackpad, or hold Ctrl and scroll.
  • Keyboard: select a photo with Tab, move it with the arrow keys (hold Shift for larger steps), zoom with + and -, and press 0 to reset it. On a gap between frames, the arrow keys resize the frames.

Layouts

  • Template: a layout for the number of images you added, often with one large photo to draw the eye. With more than 9 images, only the first 9 are used.
  • Grid: frames of the same size in rows and columns. The number of columns is chosen to crop the photos as little as possible, and you can change it.
  • Mosaic: every photo keeps its shape and is never cropped. The photos in a row share a height and the rows fill the width, so the height of the collage follows from the photos and the number of rows.

How it works

The images are decoded by your browser and never uploaded. The preview is a scaled-down view of the collage. When you download, the collage is drawn at its full size on a canvas and saved in the format you choose, so the photos keep as much detail as the collage size allows.

Tips

  • Use a spacing and a border of the same width for an even frame around every photo.
  • JPG files are the smallest for photos. Use PNG or WebP for a transparent background.
  • Very large collages may be too big for some browsers, especially on phones. If saving fails, lower the width.
