How do you find the latest version of a Docker image?
Container images are published under tags. Some tags move, such as latest or stable, while version tags such as 1.27.3 stay on one release. When you pin an image to a version in a Docker Compose file or a Kubernetes manifest, you need to know which version is the newest, and the registry's tag list is long and full of variants (1.27.3-alpine), pre-releases (3.15.0-rc.1) and build tags.
Tool description
Pick the Registry, enter the Image and press Check latest version. You get:
- The Latest version: the highest version tag
- When it was Pushed and the Digest it points to (Docker Hub and Quay.io only)
- A Pull command to copy, such as
docker pull nginx:1.27.3 - Recent versions: up to 10 version tags, highest first
A version tag is only numbers joined by dots, with an optional v: 1.27, 1.27.3, v3.15.1 and 2026.10.1 count, while 1.27.3-alpine, 3.15.0-rc.1, latest and date stamps don't. Aliases that move with a fuller version, such as 1 and 1.27 next to 1.27.3, are left out of the list.
The check runs on our server, which reads the tag list from the registry's own API without logging in, so only public images can be checked.

Supported registries
| Registry | Image examples | Tags read |
|---|---|---|
| Docker Hub | nginx, linuxserver/sonarr, hub.docker.com/_/nginx |
The 100 most recently pushed |
| GitHub Container Registry | ghcr.io/home-assistant/home-assistant |
All of them, oldest first |
| Quay.io | quay.io/prometheus/prometheus |
The 100 most recently pushed |
A tag or digest in the name, as in postgres:16, is ignored. You can also paste a link to the image's page on hub.docker.com, quay.io or github.com.
Limitations
- GitHub Container Registry lists tags oldest first and gives no dates, so every tag has to be read. Images with tens of thousands of tags, such as ones tagged for every commit, can't be read in time.
- Images that only publish moving tags such as
latesthave no version to show.
