What is FFmpeg?
FFmpeg is the free command line program behind a lot of video software. It converts, cuts, resizes and filters almost any audio, video or image file, and a whole job fits in one line, such as ffmpeg -i clip.mp4 clip.mp3. Guides and forum answers are full of FFmpeg commands, but to run one you normally have to install FFmpeg and open a terminal. This tool runs them in your browser instead.
Tool description
Choose one or more media files, then pick an Example command or paste your own into the FFmpeg command box. The 14 examples, such as converting to MP4, cutting a clip or making a GIF, use the name of your first file. The leading ffmpeg is optional, and quotes, backslash escapes and lines ending in a backslash work as they do in a shell.
Refer to your files by name after -i, such as -i clip.mp4. They sit in the /inputs folder, so anywhere else use the full path, such as subtitles=/inputs/subs.srt.
Run Command shows a progress bar and the FFmpeg log, and Cancel stops the run. Every file the command writes appears under Output file, with a preview for video, audio and images, to download alone or all together as a ZIP.
Where it runs
FFmpeg runs in your browser as WebAssembly (ffmpeg.wasm), loaded from this site, and the first run downloads about 30 MB. Your files are read from your device and never uploaded, and the results stay in browser memory until you download them.
It's a single threaded build, so it's slower than FFmpeg installed on your computer. It runs one ffmpeg command, so shell features such as pipes, &&, wildcards and variables don't work.
