What is background noise?

Background noise is a steady or evolving sound bed that helps mask distractions and shape the mood of a space. Different noise colors are defined by how their energy is distributed across frequencies, which is why white noise, pink noise, and brown noise feel different even though they all sound like “noise.”

Many people also use environmental noise, such as rain, ocean, or wind, for focus, sleep, or relaxation. These sounds are useful because they create a predictable audio texture that makes sudden changes in the environment less noticeable.

Tool description

This tool generates layered background noise directly in the browser. You can mix white, pink, and brown noise with rain, ocean, and wind sounds, then control the overall volume and each layer individually.

It is useful for creating a custom ambience blend without downloading audio files or relying on a streaming service.

Features

  • Six independent noise layers: white, pink, brown, rain, ocean, and wind
  • Real-time mixing with individual gain controls and a master volume slider
  • Browser-based playback using the Web Audio API

How it works

The tool creates looped audio buffers in the browser and applies simple filters and modulation to shape the environmental layers. Each sound source can be mixed independently, so you can build anything from a plain noise mask to a more natural ambient blend.

Because playback starts from a browser AudioContext, the first play action is required to unlock audio output.
