What is a hashtag?

A hashtag is a word or phrase that starts with the # sign, such as #TravelTips or #HomeCooking. Social platforms turn hashtags into links, so a tagged post shows up next to other posts with the same tag. People browse and follow hashtags to find content about the things they care about, which makes the right tags one of the simplest ways to reach readers who don't follow you yet.

How to choose hashtags

Good hashtags describe the post itself. A useful set usually mixes three kinds:

  • Broad tags, such as #Travel, reach large audiences but have a lot of competition.
  • Niche tags, such as #SoloTravel, belong to smaller communities with more engaged readers.
  • Specific tags, such as #LisbonFoodTour, match exactly what the post is about.

How many to use depends on the platform:

Platform Suggested number
Instagram 3 to 5 (30 max)
TikTok 3 to 5
X 1 to 2
LinkedIn 3 to 5
Facebook 1 to 3
Pinterest 2 to 5
YouTube 3 to 5

Tool description

This tool generates hashtags for a social media post with AI. Paste your caption or describe your post, product, or topic, choose how many hashtags you want, from 1 to 30, and the AI suggests a mix of broad, niche, and specific tags, ordered from most to least relevant.

The hashtags come back in one line, separated by spaces, so you can copy them straight into your post. Every tag is cleaned up before it's shown: spaces, hyphens, punctuation, and emoji are removed, duplicates are dropped, and tags made only of numbers are left out, because platforms don't link them. Multi-word tags are written in CamelCase, such as #TravelTips, which makes them easier to read and lets screen readers say each word.

The hashtags are generated in the language the site is shown in.

Examples

Post or topic:

Sunday morning hike to a waterfall in the Swiss Alps, first time using my new drone

Hashtags (8):

#SwissAlps #Hiking #WaterfallHike #DronePhotography #Switzerland #MountainViews #SundayHike #AlpineAdventures

Features

  • Mixes broad, niche, and specific hashtags, ordered by relevance
  • Generates from 1 to 30 hashtags, space-separated and ready to copy
  • Removes spaces, punctuation, duplicates, and number-only tags

Limitations

  • The AI doesn't see live platform data, so it can't tell how popular a hashtag is right now or whether a platform has restricted it. Check a tag on the platform before you rely on it.
  • Fewer hashtags than requested can come back when the AI suggests duplicates, because they are removed.
