What is Color Removal in Images?
Color removal, also known as chroma keying or color keying, is a technique used to make specific colors in an image transparent or replace them with another color. This process identifies pixels that match a target color within a certain tolerance range and transforms them accordingly.
The technique is widely used in photo editing, video production, and graphic design. Green screen photography is perhaps the most famous application—subjects are photographed against a bright green background, which is later removed and replaced with different backgrounds.
How Does Color Matching Work?
When removing a color from an image, the software analyzes each pixel and calculates its "distance" from the target color. This distance is measured in RGB color space using a mathematical formula that accounts for how humans perceive color differences.
The tolerance setting determines how close a pixel's color must be to the target color to be affected. A low tolerance only removes exact or very similar colors, while a high tolerance removes a broader range of similar shades. This flexibility allows for precise control when dealing with shadows, highlights, or color variations in the target area.
What is Edge Feathering?
Edge feathering creates smooth transitions between removed areas and the remaining image. Without feathering, removed areas have hard, jagged edges that look unnatural. Feathering gradually blends the transparency or replacement color at the boundaries, creating a more professional and seamless result.
The feathering process works by applying partial transparency or color blending to pixels that are near the tolerance threshold. Pixels well within the tolerance range are fully removed, while pixels near the edge receive partial treatment based on their color distance from the target.
Tool Description
This Image Color Remover tool allows you to select any color in your image and remove it, making it transparent or replacing it with a solid color of your choice. The tool provides real-time preview so you can see the results immediately as you adjust settings.
Upload any image, pick the color you want to remove using the color picker, adjust the tolerance to capture all variations of that color, and choose whether to make the removed areas transparent or fill them with a replacement color. The tool processes everything in your browser—no uploads to external servers required.
Examples
Green Screen Removal
- Input: Photo of a person against a green background

Features
Precise Color Selection: Use the color picker to select exactly which color to remove, with support for any hex color value
Adjustable Tolerance: Fine-tune the tolerance from 1% to 100% to capture just the exact color or a wide range of similar shades, accounting for shadows, lighting variations, and color gradients
Dual Replacement Modes: Choose between making removed areas fully transparent (perfect for background removal) or replacing them with a solid color of your choice
Smart Edge Smoothing: Enable smooth edges to create natural-looking transitions between removed and remaining areas, eliminating harsh jagged boundaries
Configurable Edge Feathering: Adjust the feather intensity from 0 to 100% to control how gradual the edge transition appears, from subtle to pronounced blending
Use Cases
E-commerce Product Photography: Remove white or colored backgrounds from product photos to create clean, professional listings with transparent backgrounds that work on any website design
Green Screen Content Creation: Process photos or video thumbnails shot against green screens, removing the green background for compositing with custom backgrounds or graphics
Logo and Graphic Editing: Change specific colors in logos, icons, or graphics without affecting other elements, useful for rebranding or creating color variations
Photo Manipulation and Compositing: Prepare images for creative compositing by removing unwanted background colors, enabling seamless blending with new backgrounds
Document and Scan Cleanup: Remove colored watermarks, stamps, or background tints from scanned documents while preserving the main content

Tips for Best Results
Choosing the Right Tolerance:
- Start with a low tolerance (15-25%) and gradually increase until all target color variations are captured
- For solid, uniform colors, use lower tolerance values
- For colors with shadows, highlights, or gradients, use higher tolerance values
When to Use Edge Smoothing:
- Enable for natural photos and organic shapes where hard edges would look artificial
- Disable for graphics, logos, or images where crisp edges are desired
- Increase feather amount when the original edge has anti-aliasing or soft boundaries
Selecting the Target Color:
- Pick the most representative shade of the color you want to remove
- For gradients, pick a middle value and increase tolerance
- Avoid picking from shadowed or highlighted areas unless specifically targeting those
Output Format Selection:
- Use PNG when you need transparency preservation
- Use WebP for the best balance of quality and file size with transparency
- Use JPG only when transparency is not needed and smaller file size is priority
