How fast does hair grow?
Human hair grows at an average rate of about 1.25 centimeters (0.5 inches) per month, or approximately 15 centimeters (6 inches) per year. However, this rate varies significantly based on genetics, age, hair type, health, and lifestyle factors. Hair growth occurs in cycles, with each follicle going through growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and resting (telogen) phases. The anagen phase, when hair actively grows, typically lasts 2-7 years.
Several biological factors influence growth speed. Straight hair tends to grow slightly faster than curly or coily hair because sebum (natural oils) travels down the hair shaft more easily, keeping it moisturized and less prone to breakage. Coily hair often appears to grow slower due to shrinkage—the hair coils back on itself, making actual length gains less visible. Age also plays a role: hair grows fastest during teenage years and early adulthood, then gradually slows after age 30.
Tool description
