What is Fraktur/Gothic script?

Fraktur is a calligraphic style of the Latin alphabet that developed in Germany during the early 16th century. It belongs to the family of blackletter typefaces, characterized by ornate, angular letterforms with dramatic thick and thin strokes. The name "Fraktur" comes from the Latin "fractus" meaning "broken," referring to the fractured or angular appearance of the letters. Historically, Fraktur was the dominant typeface in German-speaking countries for over 400 years and was used for printing books, newspapers, and official documents until the mid-20th century.
