What is a digital signature in Windows files?
Windows executables and installers can include embedded signature data that identifies the signer and the signing algorithm. In PE files such as .exe or .dll, the signature is usually stored in a certificate table. MSI packages use their own container format for similar metadata.
That embedded data can tell you who signed the file and which algorithms were used, but it is not the same thing as a full trust-chain verification by the operating system.
Tool description
This tool inspects .exe, .dll, .sys, .msi, and .msp files and extracts the embedded digital signature information it can find. It shows signer certificate data, digest algorithms, validity dates, and status notes.
It is useful when you want a quick look at signature metadata without opening specialized Windows tools.
Examples
- A signed Windows executable
- A signed MSI installer package
- A system driver file with embedded certificate data
Features
- Best-effort parsing for both PE and MSI formats
- Per-signature certificate details and digest algorithms
- Clear warnings for unsigned or unsupported files
Limitations
The tool reads embedded signature data only. It does not perform Windows trust validation or full certificate-chain verification.
MSI support is heuristic and some files may be reported as parsed signature blobs rather than fully verified signatures.
