What is a currency converter based on ECB rates?
A currency converter based on European Central Bank (ECB) reference rates lets you convert between world currencies using official, published exchange rate data rather than estimates or marked-up rates from a bank. The ECB publishes daily reference rates for major currencies, and services built on this data provide free, transparent access to historical and current rates - useful for finance, travel planning, invoicing, and tracking how currencies move over time.
Tool description
This tool converts amounts between currencies using real exchange rate data sourced from free, publicly available providers (Frankfurter, backed by ECB reference rates, and exchangerate.dev). Enter an amount, pick your source and target currencies, and instantly see the converted value along with the current exchange rate. You can also view a historical rate chart over the past week, month, year, or since 1999, and switch between data providers.
Features
- Real-time currency conversion using live exchange rate data
- Two selectable data sources: Frankfurter (ECB reference rates) and exchangerate.dev

- One-click currency swap between "From" and "To"
- Searchable currency dropdowns for quickly finding a currency by code or name
- Displays the exact exchange rate and the date it was published
- Copy the converted amount or exchange rate with one click
How to use
- Enter the amount you want to convert
- Select the source currency ("From") and target currency ("To") from the searchable dropdowns
- Optionally, click "Swap currencies" to reverse the conversion direction
- View the converted amount and current exchange rate in the output panel
- Choose a time range (Week, Month, Year, or All time) to view the rate history chart
- Optionally, switch the rate source in the "Rate source" dropdown to compare providers
Tips
- Exchange rates update once per business day (reference rates are not real-time market quotes), so rates will match the most recent ECB publication, not intraday market fluctuations
- Use the "All time" range to see long-term trends since the euro's reference rate series began in January 1999
- Compare the two data providers if you want to cross-check a rate before making a financial decision
FAQ
How often are the exchange rates updated? Rates are published once per business day, following the ECB's reference rate release schedule (or the equivalent schedule of the selected provider).
Are these rates suitable for real-time trading? No - these are reference rates meant for informational purposes like budgeting, invoicing, or tracking trends, not for executing time-sensitive trades.
What's the difference between the two data sources? Frankfurter serves ECB reference rates, while exchangerate.dev is an independent free API. Both provide daily rates; results may differ slightly since they can draw from different underlying data.
Why can't I find a specific currency? Available currencies depend on what each data provider publishes. Try switching the "Rate source" dropdown to see if the other provider covers the currency you need.
