What is EAN-8?

EAN-8 is the short version of EAN-13, for products too small for a full barcode, such as lipsticks, sweets or pencils. Its 8 digits are a GTIN-8: seven digits that a GS1 member organization assigns to one product, followed by a check digit. While EAN-13 numbers are made from a company prefix, EAN-8 numbers are issued one by one, for packages where an EAN-13 barcode really doesn't fit.

Tool description

Enter seven digits and the tool calculates the check digit and draws the barcode, with the digits under the bars in the usual EAN-8 layout. Enter all eight and it checks the last one, so a mistyped number shows an error instead of a barcode. Change the bar and background colors, hide the digits if you don't need them, and download the barcode as a PNG, JPG or WebP image.

Features

  • Check digit - calculated from 7 digits, or checked when you enter 8
  • Standard layout - the digits in two groups under the bars
  • Custom colors - any color for the bars and the background
  • Image download - PNG, JPG or WebP

Tips

  • For products sold in stores, use a number from your GS1 member organization: checkouts look products up by the number.
  • If the package has room for it, use an EAN-13 barcode instead, as GS1 issues EAN-8 numbers only when an EAN-13 doesn't fit.
