What is a dummy text file?

A dummy text file is a .txt file full of filler text. Use one to test file uploads, text editors, log parsers or anything else that reads plain text, especially when you need a file of an exact size or with specific line endings.

Tool description

This tool generates a plain text file in your browser. Choose the content: lorem ipsum paragraphs, numbered lines, or lines of 80 random letters and digits. Then size it one of two ways:

  • Paragraph or line count gives you 1 to 100,000 paragraphs or lines.
  • Exact file size cuts the text to the size you enter in B, KB or MB, up to 50 MB, with the BOM counted in.

You can pick LF or CRLF line endings and the encoding: UTF-8, UTF-8 with BOM, or UTF-16 LE. The preview shows the start of the file along with its size, line count and word count. Regenerate makes new text.

Example

Numbered lines look like this:

Line 1: Officia culpa irure velit proident ex laboris nulla.
Line 2: Commodo minim eiusmod aute sunt deserunt veniam ad est.

Features

  • Lorem ipsum, numbered lines, or random letters and digits
  • Size by count or by an exact file size up to 50 MB
  • LF or CRLF line endings, in UTF-8, UTF-8 with BOM or UTF-16 LE

Limitations

With an exact file size, the text is cut off at that size, so the file can end in the middle of a word. Past 256 KB, lorem ipsum paragraphs start to repeat. UTF-16 LE uses two bytes per character, so an odd size comes out one byte smaller.
