What is a P-touch label printer?

Brother P-touch printers print labels on TZe tape, a laminated plastic tape that comes in cassettes. The P-touch CUBE models, such as the PT-P300BT and the PT-P710BT, have no keyboard or screen: they connect over Bluetooth and normally print from Brother's phone apps. 12 mm is the most common tape width and the widest one the PT-P300BT takes. On 12 mm tape the PT-P300BT prints along the middle of the tape, at 180 dpi; this tool keeps text within a strip 7.9 mm (56 dots) high, so letters don't lose their tops or bottoms.

Tool description

This tool designs a text label for 12 mm tape and prints it on a Brother Bluetooth label printer straight from the browser, without Brother's app or a driver.

Type the text of the label. It's sized to fill the height of the tape, and when you type more lines, they share that height. To keep the same text size across labels, or for smaller text, set a fixed font size in points instead; the tool tells you the largest size that still fits the tape. Choose the font (sans-serif, serif or monospace), bold, the alignment of the lines and a frame around the text. The label is as long as the text needs, or you set a fixed length in millimeters and the text shrinks if it doesn't fit.

The preview shows the label dot for dot as the printer will print it at 180 dpi, so you can see how thin lines and small text will come out on the tape. Above it, pick the color of your cassette, such as black on yellow (TZe-631) or white on black (TZe-335), to see the label in its real colors. The color only changes the preview: the printer prints the same dots on any tape, and the cassette gives them their color. Under the preview you see the size of the label in millimeters.

To print, first pair the printer in the Bluetooth settings of your computer or Android phone. Print then opens the browser's list of devices, where you pick the printer, for example PT-P300BT1234. The tool asks the printer for its status before sending the label and tells you in plain words when there's no tape, the tape isn't 12 mm wide, the cover is open or the batteries are low. For the next labels, it keeps using the printer you picked.

Printing works in Chrome and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, and in Chrome on Android, which can talk to Bluetooth printers through the Web Serial API. Safari, Firefox and iPhones can't: download the label as a PNG instead and print it from Brother's app. The PNG is the print area at 180 dpi, one pixel for each dot.

The label is drawn and sent to the printer by your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
