What is air traffic control?

Air traffic control (ATC) is the coordination of aircraft movement around airports and through the sky to keep planes safely separated. Controllers watch each aircraft's position, heading, and destination, then guide pilots along a specific route so no two planes ever get too close to each other. Timing and spatial awareness matter more than speed: a good controller plans a clear path well before an aircraft gets anywhere near danger.

The same core skill, plotting non-intersecting paths for multiple moving objects heading to different, color-coded destinations, shows up in simplified arcade versions of ATC, where players draw flight paths by hand instead of issuing radio instructions.

Tool description

This is a browser-based air traffic control simulation. Planes enter from the edges of the screen and fly in straight lines until guided. Click or tap a plane and drag to draw a path toward the runway that matches its color, then release to lock it in. Land planes safely to score points while avoiding mid-air collisions.

Features

  • Color-matched runways: each runway accepts specific plane colors, shown as chips at the start of the runway; accepted colors can change over time as runways temporarily close and reopen
  • Increasing difficulty: plane spawn rate and flight speed gradually ramp up as your level increases
  • Score tracking: current score, session high score (saved locally), level, and remaining lives are all shown live during play

How it works

  • Drag from any incoming plane to draw its flight path; the path preview turns the plane's color once it correctly lines up with a matching, open runway
  • Planes follow the drawn path exactly, then automatically taxi and shrink away once they touch down
  • Colliding two planes costs a life; running out of lives ends the game
  • Runways occasionally close, forcing the remaining open runways to temporarily accept more than one color
