What is reaction time?
Reaction time is the interval between receiving a stimulus and responding to it. In humans, this typically ranges from 150 to 300 milliseconds for visual stimuli. Your brain must first perceive the signal, process it, decide on an action, and then send motor commands to your muscles. This entire chain happens in a fraction of a second, but the exact duration varies based on factors like age, fatigue, attention level, and practice.
Professional athletes, gamers, and pilots often have faster reaction times due to training and conditioning. The average human visual reaction time is around 250 milliseconds, while trained individuals can achieve times below 200 milliseconds consistently.
Tool description
This reaction tester measures how quickly you can respond to a visual color change. The test presents a simple challenge: wait for the screen to turn green, then click as fast as possible. Your reaction time is measured in milliseconds with precision timing.
How it works
- Click the blue area to start the test
- Wait while the screen is red - don't click yet!
- When the screen turns green, click immediately
- Your reaction time is displayed in milliseconds
- Repeat to track your performance over multiple attempts
Features
- Precise millisecond timing: Measures your reaction with high accuracy
- Performance rating: Instant feedback categorizing your speed (Excellent, Great, Good, Average)
- Statistics tracking: View your average time, best time, and total attempts
- Anti-cheat detection: Clicking too early is detected and flagged
- Random delay: Wait time varies between 1.5-5 seconds to prevent anticipation
Rating scale
| Reaction Time | Rating |
|---|---|
| Under 200 ms | Excellent |
| 200-249 ms | Great |
| 250-299 ms | Good |
| 300-349 ms | Average |
| 350+ ms | Keep practicing |
