What is a passphrase?
A passphrase is a type of password made up of multiple words instead of random characters. Unlike traditional passwords like "aB3$xY9", a passphrase uses memorable words such as "correct-horse-battery-staple". This makes passphrases easier to remember while still being highly secure due to their length.
The concept gained popularity from XKCD's famous comic about password strength, which demonstrated that longer passphrases made of random words can be more secure and easier to remember than complex character-based passwords.
