When does winter start?
Winter begins on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, when a hemisphere is tilted farthest from the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere this occurs around December 21–22, while the Southern Hemisphere's winter solstice falls around June 20–21. Despite having the least daylight, the coldest temperatures usually arrive weeks later because oceans and land masses take time to release stored heat.
The winter solstice has deep cultural significance across many civilizations. Celebrations such as Yule, Dongzhi, and Saturnalia all mark this turning point when days begin to lengthen again. Astronomically, winter lasts from the solstice to the following vernal equinox.
