What is Chinese New Year?
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is the most important traditional holiday in Chinese culture. It marks the first day of the lunisolar Chinese calendar, which typically falls between January 21 and February 20 on the Gregorian calendar. The exact date shifts each year because the Chinese calendar follows the cycles of the Moon rather than the Sun alone.
Celebrations last about fifteen days, culminating in the Lantern Festival. Traditions include family reunions, red envelope gift-giving, dragon and lion dances, fireworks, and elaborate feasts. Each year is associated with one of twelve zodiac animals in a repeating cycle — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
Chinese New Year is observed as a public holiday not only in China but also in many countries across East and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam (Tet), South Korea (Seollal), and communities worldwide with significant Chinese diaspora populations.
Tool description
This tool shows a live countdown to the next Chinese New Year. It updates every second, displaying the remaining days, hours, minutes, and seconds. A progress bar tracks how much of the waiting period has elapsed since the previous celebration ended. The tool covers dates from 2024 through 2050 using pre-computed astronomical data.
Features
- Real-time countdown ticking every second until the next Chinese New Year
- Progress bar showing elapsed time since the previous Lunar New Year celebration ended
- Accurate dates from 2024 through 2050 based on the lunisolar calendar
- Fifteen-day celebration period recognized — status changes during the Spring Festival
- Target date displayed in your local format
How it works
Because the Chinese calendar is lunisolar, the date of Chinese New Year cannot be calculated with a simple formula. This tool uses a lookup table of pre-computed dates derived from astronomical data for each year from 2024 to 2050. The countdown compares the current time against the next entry in the table and updates every second.
Use cases
- Planning travel to family reunions or festival events during the Spring Festival period
- Coordinating business schedules around the extended Chinese New Year holiday in East Asia
- Learning when the next Lunar New Year falls for cultural or educational purposes
