How does Minecraft coordinate system work?
Minecraft uses a three-dimensional coordinate system to define every location in the game world. The X-axis runs east (positive) and west (negative), the Z-axis runs south (positive) and north (negative), and the Y-axis represents altitude—from bedrock at the bottom to the build limit at the top. Every block in Minecraft has a unique coordinate, and players can view their current position by pressing F3 (debug screen) on Java Edition or enabling coordinates in world settings on Bedrock Edition.
Understanding coordinates is essential for navigation, especially when traveling long distances, building large structures, or sharing locations with other players. The coordinate system is consistent across all dimensions, though the Nether has a 1:8 distance ratio with the Overworld, meaning traveling 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld.
